Description

This is a row of four houses, numbered 70 to 74, built in the early to mid-19th century. They are part of a wider group of listed buildings along Palmerston Street. The front of the building is three storeys high and has a slate roof. The upper floor is colourwashed brick, with a decorative band running below the sills of the first-floor windows. Vermiculated quoins mark the corners. There are six windows, with one narrower window at each end. The windows are sash windows set in reveals, without glazing bars, and have painted stucco detailing around them, including vermiculated keystones.

On the ground floor, there's a round-headed doorway with a moulded stucco architrave at each end, each with a semi-circular fanlight above the door. The front door to number 70 is modern, while the front door to number 74 has a panelled lower section and glazed upper section. Number 70 has a window to the east of its doorway that matches the design of the upper-floor windows. Number 74 has a modern bow window to the west, contained within the original window opening, with glazing bars in the reveals, and is finished with a stuccoed voussoir and keystone. Number 72 has a large shop window and doorway flanked by pilasters, with a modern fascia and the original moulded cornice above.
