Description

The Church of St Andrew is a 13th-century church, with a 15th-century chancel, a 16th-century porch and bellcote, and restorations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rubble flint and stone, with rendered surfaces, stone dressings, weatherboarded timber elements, and an old plain tile roof. The plan incorporates a 15th-century chancel onto a 13th-century nave, with a central 16th-century porch and a 16th-century bellcote to the west; the western bay of the nave serves as a vestry. The chancel has a stone plinth. The eastern end features a 15th-century three-light cinquefoiled window with a label, and a 19th-century gabled parapet. To either side at the west are single-light windows of similar design. Two 18th-century oval memorials are set into the south wall. The nave has windows of 18th-century style but with earlier jambs to either side, and a large pointed lancet at the centre of the north side. A central, gabled, timber porch from the 16th century is on the south side, with large posts and a tie beam that has an arched opening cut into it. The porch has 19th-century bargeboards. The interior of the porch features a 13th-century chamfered round-headed door. An 18th-century tablet is on the east side, and a 17th-century headstone on the west. A two-light gabled dormer is positioned above the west end. A 13th-century ogee chamfered pointed door and a 18th-century brick buttress are on the west side. The bellcote has a continuous louvre on its sides, with a hipped roof. Inside the chancel, the eastern window is set within a continuous chamfered rear arch. Moulded image brackets are on either side. A square-headed cinquefoiled niche with a piscina below is in the southeast corner. The side windows have similar rear arches. 19th-century furnishings and tiles are present. The plastered ceiling reveals a chamfered tiebeam. A 19th-century chancel arch of two moulded orders springs from huge plain corbels. A 16th-century screen has a central archway with carved spandrels and trefoiled arcading at the top on both sides. The nave has a splayed rear arch to the southeast window, and remains of a rear arch of the lancet below. Medieval tiles are inset in the splay of the northeast window. Wide splays are present at the central north window, and a flat lintel at the door. An 18th-century octagonal font stands on a pillar and base near the door; remains of a wall painting are above the door to the east. The roof is a king post design. A bay in the west is blocked off by panelling below the tie beam; plaster covers the space above, and a Royal Arms board dated 1788 is affixed. A 17th-century timber pulpit with arcaded panels, carved corbels for book rests, and a door is located in the northeast corner. A cupboard dated 1713 is in the southwest corner. Floor slabs commemorate William Hunt (1756) and Richard Harris (1679). 16th-century pews with round finials are on the south side, while plainer, restored pews are on the north side.
