Description

The Drummond Arms is a hotel built in the mid-19th century. The ground floor is made of rusticated stone with precise grooved jointing, featuring keys to flat arches. Above this, there is a stone band on the first floor that supports the classical order. The upper walls are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, with pilasters that have moulded stone caps and bases. These pilasters support a brick entablature topped with a stone cornice and brick dentils, while the blocking course is stepped in the middle section and features a central stone gable with a shield. The building has rubbed flat arches and stone cills on brackets, with balusters below the first-floor openings. The roof is a low-pitched hipped slate design.

The front elevation is symmetrical and has three storeys with a window arrangement of 1.3.1. There are pilasters marking the projection of the centrepiece on either side, which are also returned at the corners. The windows are sashes set in reveals. The second and fourth bays have stone doorways with a cornice and frieze on console brackets, leading up to a flight of three stone steps flanked by plain iron walls. In front of the building, a moulded stone curb supports cast-iron columns that are linked by plain rails, curving inward at each side. The rear of the building has later extensions, and on the east side, there is a single-storeyed wing of a later date but in a continuous style, which extends along Pylewell Road as plain blocks that were formerly stables.
