Description
This memorial gas lamp dates from 1832 and was erected in tribute to Admiral Sir Harry Burrard-Neale and his brother George Burrard. The lamp’s column and plinth are made of cast iron, while the lantern, ladder rest, and decorative bracket are of cast and wrought iron, all painted silver. The square plinth features panels inscribed with details of the Burrard brothers' contributions to the town. Two panels commemorate Admiral Burrard's gift of iron columns for public lamps, while the others state that the town was first lit by gas on September 20th, 1832, and that George Burrard Esquire presented all the public lamps. A band of Greek key decoration sits above the panels. The fluted column is topped by a simple capital, which supports a later wrought iron bracket with elaborate scrollwork, holding two lanterns.
