Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church with origins dating back to the Saxon and Norman periods. It features an aisleless nave and chancel, along with transepts. The chancel was restored in the 13th century, the south chapel was added in the 14th century, and the north aisle and tower were constructed in the 15th century. A significant restoration took place in 1863 by B Ferrey, which included rebuilding the early south aisle and north chapel, as well as adding south and west porches and a north vestry.

The exterior is predominantly Victorian, with some reused 16th-century windows. The walls are made of flint and stone rubble, accented with stone dressings, a plinth, and stepped buttresses. It features four plain Tudor windows and others with Decorated style tracery. The tower, which has three stages, is primarily Tudor and Jacobean in style, characterized by massive diagonal buttresses on the north side.

Inside, the church displays 13th and 14th-century arcading, including two round arches, one of which is of early date. There is a small Norman window at the east end of the chancel. The interior also contains several notable wall monuments, including two by Rysbrack, and various tombstones. The reredos features a Venetian painting of the Last Supper, which has been restored but is believed to be of early 16th-century origin. Additionally, a helm and a hatchment are displayed in the north aisle.
