Description
The Church Gatehouse is an 18th-century house with early and mid-19th century extensions, located in Totton and Eling. The building features walls of brickwork in Flemish bond, a flush blue band at the first floor, brick dentil eaves, and a rendered rear. It has a hipped tile roof.
The west front elevation was originally symmetrical, consisting of two storeys and an attic with three windows, and has been extended at the north end to include an additional window. The windows are sashes in exposed frames, with two mid-19th century splayed windows. The ground floor has bays with hipped roofs and casements, including French doors in the centre of the south side bays. There is a stucco porch with a blocking course above a cornice featuring Greek mouldings, side windows, a plain doorway, and half-glazed double doors. A 20th-century half-glazed porch is located at the north side.
The east elevation, which overlooks the wide River Test, is less regular and features a large central projection with a rounded end. This section contains a Regency metal balcony with a concave hood, thin supports, and wide windows, including central French doors.
