Description
Fernhill Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 18th century, with repairs made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of cob, with the south elevation and east wall repaired using Flemish garden wall band brick. It features a straw thatch roof with a plain ridge, eyebrow dormers, and a brick stack on the western side. The cottage is 1½ storeys tall and has a symmetrical facade with two windows.
The central porch is vertically boarded and made of rough timber, topped with a corrugated iron roof and featuring a part-glazed door. This porch is flanked by two flush-framed 2-light casements; the window on the west side is set under a timber lintel, while the one on the east is under a cambered brick arch. The corresponding dormers also have similar 2-light casements.
On the eastern elevation, there is a small 4-pane flush framed casement at the first floor above a vertically boarded rough timber outshut, which also has a corrugated iron roof. The northern elevation includes a 2-light flush framed casement on the west side and a small casement on the east side, both located at ground floor level. The western elevation features a single high 2-pane casement.
Inside, the cottage consists of one full-depth room with an open fireplace on the west side, and to the east, there is a room that has been subdivided to create a staircase leading to the rear. There are two rooms on the first floor, and the interior includes contemporary joinery, including doors and ironmongery.
