Description

The Havant War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1922, designed by architects Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson and Alfred Edwin Stallard. It is located within a semi-circular paved area, enclosed at the back by a screen wall that is set back into the north-east corner of the churchyard of St Faith’s Church, facing the crossroads at the center of Havant.

The memorial is made of light-colored limestone and stands approximately 6 meters tall. It features a tapering octagonal column topped with a cross. The column is set on an engaged gothic-style plinth adorned with carved quatrefoil panels, which is raised on an engaged gothic-style splayed base with carved paired lancet panels. The semi-circular screen wall has a shallow plinth and is constructed of knapped flint with limestone ashlar dressings and knapped flint panels.

The wall bears the inscription ‘REMEMBER THE MEN OF HAVANT WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914-19’, with ‘1939-45’ also inscribed on the screen wall, flanking the cross above the plinth. Each end of the wall features a buttress, with the north-western buttress displaying an attached bronze panel. There are eight bronze panels listing the names of 103 men who died during the First World War, along with six additional panels recording the names of 50 men who died in the Second World War.
