Description
The summerhouse, located immediately west of Oaklands, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of knapped flint with red brick dressings and features a conical roof, which has been re-clad and was likely originally thatched. This small, single-cell octagonal building has a doorway on the west side. Each side includes a pointed arch window, which are alternately blind or fitted with sashes that have intersecting glazing bars. The west side also has a narrow pointed arch doorway. Inside, the summerhouse has a plain interior with plastered walls and ceiling. It is situated in the grounds of Oaklands, the residence of General Napier, a military historian and author known for his work "History of the War in the Peninsula."
