Description

Purbrook House is an early 19th-century house, now divided into flats and offices. It is located on London Road, Purbrook. The house is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a tile roof, a parapet featuring stone coping and a brick dentilled band. It has rubbed cambered arches, rusticated quoins, stone sills, and a plinth. The main block is square, with three storeys and a cellar, and it is adjoined by lower extensions to the rear and north side.

The symmetrical east front has three windows. The sash windows are set in reveals; the second-floor windows are original. A sash window with three lights on the ground floor north side has a frame incorporating a cornice, frieze and pilasters. An oval porch is formed by two detached columns, each projecting beyond two attached half columns, and contains double half-glazed doors, accessed by two stone steps.

The symmetrical south elevation is similar, featuring fluted columns to an oval porch, positioned above a flight of steps with flanking wrought-iron rails. A single-storeyed wing extends from the west side and exhibits symmetrical treatment with three bays, featuring panels above arched openings, including a central doorway. The remaining elevations are plain.
