Description

Sacred Heart Church at St Michael's Convent is a convent church built between 1922 and 1925 by W.C. Mangan. It is constructed of English bond fletton brick, featuring soldier courses and herring-bone patterns, with a concrete interlocking tile roof and brick-coped gable ends. The church has a unique plan with three naves arranged at 45 degrees to one another, all converging on a single sanctuary with a semi-circular apse. The central nave is designated for the nuns, the south nave for parishioners, and the north nave was intended for the convent children.

The exterior showcases alternating three-light and single-light round-headed windows, with brick piers that are corbelled at the top. Above the windows, there is herring-bone pattern brickwork, and below, soldier courses with brick buttresses in between that have tile-weathered set-offs. The gable ends are three bays wide, featuring round arch windows, with the tall centre window raised above the others. A brick bellcote is positioned over the east gable, which is connected to the convent, while the north gable, which was formerly linked to the convent, no longer has this connection. The wide west gable where the naves converge includes a semi-circular apse with narrow round-arch windows and a single-storey vestry that projects below.

Inside, the naves are adorned with open timber hammer-beam roofs. At the point where the roofs meet, the trusses are painted and supported on round piers, with traceried details above the arches. There is a galleried organ loft at the east end of the nuns' nave. The apse and the chapels on either side contain elaborate marble altars, and the original pews remain intact, although the communion rail has been removed.
