Description

Warblington Castle is a significant remnant of a large Tudor courtyard house, constructed for Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, between 1514 and 1526. The castle was largely destroyed at the end of the Civil War in 1643. What remains includes part of the gateway tower, featuring a moulded stone arch of the gate, some of the south wall of the tower, and a complete south-east octagonal stair turret that stands five storeys tall. The turret has a castellated top, drip moulds at each storey, small rectangular openings, and a doorway. The red brick walling is in English bond with stone dressings. The wall extending west from the turret, which was originally internal, has brickwork with a fragment of a castellated top, while the wall extending north has a stone face. The drip moulds from the turret continue along the north wall to the jambs of windows on the first, second, and third floors, as well as to the inner gateway arch. A small later outshot on the south side is flanked by stone walling, forming a shed.
