Description

The Greywell Tunnel Portal is a Grade II listed structure located on the Basingstoke Canal, built in 1792. It serves as the entrance to the canal tunnel, which runs westward. The portal features a facade made of red brick in English bond, with a round arched opening that includes a stone keystone and impost blocks. The parapet slopes from the center and is supported by brick bracketting, leading to rusticated square piers on either side. On each side of the portal are rounded panels, and above the arch is a rectangular panel that displays a plaque stating: "GREYWELL TUNNEL BUILT 1792. Length 1230 yards." The portal was restored in 1975 and includes brick cutwaters.
