Description
The Barracks is a Grade II listed building dating from the 17th century and 18th century. It consists of an L-shaped block made up of two attached timber-framed structures, with the front clad in brickwork that is dated 1721. The building features three windows on the front, a red tile roof that is half-hipped at the ends, and a catslide on the north side, which includes two dormers. Each frame unit has a large chimney stack, with one shaft for each.
The internal rear angle reveals exposed timber framing with brick-nogging, and the lower walls are finished with brickwork, some of which consists of old small bricks. The east wall is primarily constructed of old brickwork. The front (west) and south gable are made of 18th-century brickwork in Flemish bond, featuring a first-floor band, cambered openings on the ground floor, and a plinth. The upper part of the south gable displays flush blue headers with the year 1721 prominently featured. The building has casement windows with old square-leaded lights at the rear and modern diagonal leaded lights at the front, along with plain doors set in solid frames.
