Description
The Malt House is a two-storeyed timber-framed building dating from the 16th, 19th, and 20th centuries, located on Greywell Street. It features a wide front and has a small old wing at the rear, which is partly surrounded by a larger 19th-century wing at the south end that includes a kiln superstructure. The north end has a modern small rear wing. The front elevation has five windows arranged in a 2-5 pattern and is topped with a red tile roof that is half-hipped at the south end, with decorative gable tile-hanging up to the first floor level. The north side has a half-hipped front gable and a shafted stack. The front wall displays close-studding with a jettied frame supported by curved brackets. Below the gable on the north side, there is a later wall aligned with the overhang, and the small old rear extensions show exposed framing. The front features herringbone brick infill, while other areas have brick infill and walling. The building has modern leaded casements and an old-style modern door, and the front is largely obscured by an ancient wisteria creeper.
