Description

Palace Gate Farmhouse dates to the mid-17th century, with further development in the 18th century. The farmhouse comprises three distinct sections. The earliest part, located to the north, is a two-storey house that has undergone alterations but retains stylish details. It has symmetrical east and west frontages, each featuring a pattern of one window. The centre of this section slightly projects. Remnants of a former hipped roof are visible at the eaves, but the upper section is now covered by a red tile roof with gables at each end, and a large chimney stack is attached to the south. The walls are red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with projecting chamfered quoins. A thin band runs across the first floor, and there is a plinth with altered openings and infilling of what were formerly large windows. The gable is timber-framed. Three original mullioned and transomed windows remain on the first floor (two on the west side, one central on the east) alongside later casement windows. The original central doorways have been blocked, with the current entrance located in a small, slate-roofed projection extending from the north-west corner. A longer, lower domestic range, dating to the 18th century, is situated to the south of the original section. An 19th-century two-storey extension connects the older section to the east, with a single-storey outshot attached to its south side. This southern range has red tile roofing with a hip on the east wind and red brick walls, with blue rainwater pipes near the base. It features casement windows, some of which are original with leaded lights, and two plain door surrounds, one with an old panelled door on the east side. Lower storage buildings with weather-boarded walls are attached to the south.
