Description

This property comprises a house and two shops at 6, 6A, and 8 West Street. The rear portion, at number 6A, dates back to the 17th century, while the front range, including numbers 6 and 8, was constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century, with 20th-century shopfronts added later. The front range is primarily built of red brick, with number 6 stuccoed and number 8 painted except for the rear elevation. It has a pegtiled roof and a central brick stack. The rear range is timber-framed, but has been refronted with cement render and incised lines in the early 19th century.

The front range is two storeys high with three windows, featuring 16-pane sashes. It incorporates 20th-century shopfronts. The rear range is also two storeys high with two windows, a partially stuccoed end stack, and a lean-to extension to the rear. A plinth is present. A two-storey canted bay is on the corner, with a 19th-century tripartite sash window on the first floor and a 19th-century four-light bay window on the ground floor. Another early 19th-century six-pane sash window is present on the right side, with a moulded architrave. An early 19th-century doorcase features a flat wooden hood supported by elaborate cast iron brackets.

Inside, a steep early 19th-century winder staircase is situated within the property. A first-floor rear room contains a framed partition with a diagonal trace and a possible blocked-in open fireplace. An early 19th-century plank door is also present. The roof structure includes through purlins, queen struts, and a collar beam. Rafters were formerly concealed behind lath and plaster.
