Description
The lychgate to the Church of St Mary was built in 1871, likely designed by R Brandon for A Hornby. It features a combination of stone and wood, topped with a plain tile roof that has crested ridge tiles. The structure consists of one by two bays with a gable end resting on a plinth. Low stone walls support an arcaded wooden superstructure, which includes a central archway with a cross-braced double gate. The lychgate is adorned with decorated cusped bargeboards and has an iron finial in the style of a Celtic cross. Inside, there are slatted wooden benches along the sides, and slender wooden columns support a central arch-braced crown-post truss. The floor is made of patterned black, red, and white tiles with stone thresholds. This lychgate is part of a group that includes the church, a school, and a schoolhouse, all built by Hornby to serve the villages of Hook and Warsash.
