Description
The wall surrounding the walled garden of the former Hook House dates probably to the late 18th century and was certainly present by 1868. The garden wall forms a pentagonal shape, featuring cruciform paths dividing the enclosed area into four segments, with a central raised bed as a focal point. The area enclosed measures approximately 9375 square meters (about 1 hectare).
The walls themselves stand about 3.5 meters high and are constructed of local red brick in English bond, pointed with lime mortar. They taper towards the top and are capped with stone coping. A section of the north wall incorporates vents designed to warm the wall using fires. The wall is absent along the southwest side where structures including Dormy House, Golf House, and Carrington House have been built; Carrington and Golf House are listed separately as Old Dormy House, and Dormy House is a late 20th-century addition which is not included in this listing. The rear wall of the orangery forms part of the listed wall, although the orangery itself has largely been rebuilt.
The garden's four segments are individually planted – fruit trees in the northwest quadrant, a formal garden with grass and shrubs in the northeast quadrant, domestic gardens behind the orangery, Dormy House, Golf House, and Carrington House in the southwest quadrant, and lawns and shrubs associated with Hook Park House in the southeast quadrant. Hook House itself was built between 1785 and 1789, modelled on Government House in Bombay, and was destroyed by fire between 1903 and 1908. The Ordnance Survey map of 1868 depicts the walls and garden paths in their current positions.
The wall surrounding the walled garden is designated at Grade II for its late 18th-century date, good quality construction, intact condition (including the internal warming flues), and near-complete survival of its original extent. It contributes to the understanding and group value of the wider Hook Park Estate, including other listed buildings such as the coach house and courtyard walls. The garden retains its original plan and the atmosphere typical of a walled garden.
