Description

The United Reformed Church, originally a Congregational Chapel, was opened in 1836 by J Adams of Gosport and underwent renovations in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings, while the returns are rendered and scored to resemble ashlar, and the rear is made of red brick in stretcher bond. It features a corrugated iron roof and has a gable-end facing the road, comprising three rows of seven bays in a Gothic style.

The church has four-centred arched openings, with windows that include stone tracery forming four-centred arched lights and honeycomb iron glazing bars. The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a chamfered plinth and offset diagonal buttresses. The two buttresses flanking the taller, projecting central bay are gableted and have juxtaposed gableted finials behind a parapet. The openings feature two chamfered orders, with a central double door that has arched panelling beneath a hoodmould adorned with decorative stops and a string course. Above the door is a three-light window with perpendicular style tracery and a hoodmould, along with an oculus containing a cinquefoil in the gable. The outer bays have narrower transomed two-light windows, and the returns are divided by offset buttresses, each featuring a transomed two-light window. The interior has not been inspected.
