Description

Spring Pond Lodge is an estate lodge built around 1827-1828, likely designed by P. F. Robinson for Sir James Macdonald of Woolmer Lodge. The building is constructed of stone rubble with rusticated stone quoins and features a plain tile roof with deep verges at the gable ends, adorned with ornate bargeboards and pendants. A brick axial stack with diagonally-set shafts is present.

The lodge has a rectangular plan, with a porch on the front left and an outshut on the front right, as well as an integral outshut at the rear. In the 20th century, the space between the porch and the front outshut has been infilled. The design is in a picturesque Tudor style and may have originally consisted of a pair of lodges.

The exterior is one storey with an attic, showcasing an asymmetrical west front. The gabled porch on the left features ornate bargeboards and a chamfered four-centred arch doorway with a hoodmould and a stone panel above. The small outshut on the right has small lancet windows and a lean-to roof. The central space between these two features has been infilled with a glazed wooden arcade. There is a gabled half-dormer on the right with ornate bargeboards, a pendant, and a stone window. The right-hand return displays stone two and three-light stone mullion-transom windows, while the left return has a stone canted bay window on the ground floor and a stone two-light window above with a hoodmould. The main roof extends over the outshut on the left, which is set back and includes a doorway with a depressed arch. Casement windows are present throughout. The interior has not been inspected.
