Description
Mellow Farmhouse is a building that combines elements from the 16th century, 17th century, and late 19th century. It features mixed wall materials and a tiled roof. Originally, it was a timber-framed structure designed as a two-room house with a central smoke bay. In the early 17th century, alterations included the addition of a chimney in the smoke bay, the creation of a first floor, and an extension on the west side, along with minor additions at the rear from the 19th century.
The front of the farmhouse is two storeys high and has four windows. The roof is hipped at the west end, featuring a gablet, and gabled at the east end. The exposed framework is covered in the upper parts of the front and west walls with tile hanging that has decorative scalloped bands, and there is brick infill above a deep plinth made of rubble ironstone. The windows are casements, and there is a boarded door set within an architrave.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts massive hearths, an oven (originally two), an old dog-leg staircase, old doors, and remnants of painting on a beam.
