Description

The war memorial located south-east of the Church of St Andrew in Medstead was dedicated in 1920. It was sculpted by Messrs G. Maile and Sons of Euston Road, London, and is approached by five stone steps made by Messrs Jeffery and Son of Medstead. The memorial is constructed from Cornish granite and features a Celtic cross with a Crusader's sword sculpted in relief at its center. It stands on a rough-hewn tapering rock base, which is supported by a rectangular plinth of more geometric proportions.

The south-west face of the rock base is inscribed with the words: 'In memory of ours 1914-1919', followed by twenty names listed in alphabetical order in two columns, concluding with the phrase 'These laid the world away'. The south-east face bears the inscription 'Also in memory of', followed by eight names in alphabetical order in two columns, concluding with '1939-1945'.

The design, featuring the Crusader sword motif and the rough, weathered quality of the un-polished granite, evokes a medieval period aesthetic, making it a fitting addition to the churchyard of the grade II listed St Andrew's Church, which dates from the 12th century.

The memorial was unveiled on 17 October 1920 by Admiral Jervoise and dedicated by the rector of St Andrew's Church, the Reverend T. F. Fulton. War memorials like this one, erected by communities to honor their war dead, are recognized for their significant historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels.
