Description
This is a barn located immediately northwest of Southdown Old Farmhouse, built in the late 19th century, around 1880 to 1890. The barn is constructed of partly rendered mass concrete and features a low-pitched slate hipped roof.
The barn has a large rectangular plan with six bays and opposing cart entrances that are off-center. The northeast front includes a cart entrance to the left of the center, which has doors made of corrugated iron sheets. The opposing cart entrance at the southwest rear is blocked with concrete blocks. There is also a narrow full-height doorway on the southeast end.
Inside, the barn has exposed shuttered concrete walls with large aggregate visible. The roof consists of six bays supported by queen-post trusses with angle struts and king-posts above the collars, along with braces to the flat ridge board. The roof structure is complete with purlins, common rafters, and battens. This barn is a rare example of a complete Victorian concrete barn.
