Description
This is a barn located immediately north of Freemantle Farmhouse, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It has a timber-framed structure with red brick walls primarily in Flemish bond, while the south end features flint with brick dressings. The barn has a hipped roof covered in corrugated asbestos sheets, with plain tile roofs on the midstreys, one of which is clad in corrugated iron.
The barn is large, consisting of nine bays with aisles surrounding it and midstreys on both sides leading to threshing floors in bays three and seven. The sixth bay from the north end is narrower, and the eighth and ninth bays at the south end were rebuilt in the 19th century.
On the exterior, the expansive roof extends down to low brick aisle walls that have blocked ventilation slits. There are two midstreys on either side, each with hipped plain tile roofs supported by straight braces and featuring plank double doors.
Inside, the frame is intact, with aisle-posts that have straight braces connecting to the arcade-plates and tie-beams. Above these, queen-struts connect to the collars, and the purlins are clasped between the collars and the principal rafters. Most of the common-rafter couples remain intact, and much of the frame is made from earlier reused timber, including a tie-beam that is dated 1664.
