Description
This is a barn dated 1849, located about 50 metres north-west of Holyoak Farmhouse. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a tall red brick plinth, constructed in a Flemish bond style with alternating two headers and one stretcher. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has gabled ends.
The barn has a plan consisting of 10 narrow structural bays, with the threshing floor situated in the two central bays. At the front, there is a midstrey, which includes an integral store or granary located in the left angle, accessible from inside the midstrey.
On the exterior, the north-east front showcases a central midstrey with an integral outshut to the left, covered by a lean-to roof that slopes down from the main roof. The midstrey features divided double doors made of vertical planks. The north-west elevation has similar doors leading to a central cart entrance.
Inside, the frame rests on the tall brick plinth and consists of vertical studding between the wall posts, lacking a mid rail but featuring long straight tension braces. The barn has an unusual roof construction for its period, with ten narrow roof bays supported by principal rafters that have curved brackets bolted to the wall posts, along with similar brackets beneath the high collars. It includes two tiers of staggered butt purlins and common rafters, finished with a ridge-board. The only tie-beams are located on either side of the threshing bay. The roof and frame of the midstrey and integral outshut are intact. The frame is primarily made of softwood, except for the wall posts flanking the threshing floor. One of these posts is inscribed with "J. Meakings October 6th 1849" in upper case letters with serifs.
The barn remains largely unaltered, apart from a floor that was inserted later into the east end.
