Description
This garden summerhouse, located about 450 metres north-north-east of Stratfield Saye House, was built in 1846 for the first Duke of Wellington. It features a timber frame, clad in boards and decorated with rustic sticks that create patterns. The summerhouse has a gabled roof covered in metal or asbestos sheets and a rectangular plan that is open at both the front and rear, divided into two compartments. It is designed to resemble a small temple, with an arcaded three-bay front and rear supported by thin polygonal columns, segmental arches, and a pedimental gable. One gable has rusticwork pierced and shaped bargeboards, while the other has bargeboards replaced by sections of bark under the verges.
Inside, the summerhouse showcases rusticwork patterns on the wall benches, as well as elaborate designs on the walls and ceiling. The interior features the date 1846, a Royal Crown, the inscription 'Dieu et Mon Droit', and the Ducal coronet with the family motto 'Vertutis Fortuna Comes'. This summerhouse was constructed to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria to Stratfield Saye.
