Description
No. 2 George Street is a two-storeyed terrace building dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, with early 19th-century additions. It exhibits internal timber framing, with varying degrees of survival, and an external brick walling of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The roof is tiled and hipped at the corner, featuring a large chimney stack with a Tudor base, which includes the base of an octagonal flue, and three modern diagonal flues. The brickwork is of English bond and Flemish bond with blue headers, incorporating a first-floor band, rubbed flat arches and one cambered arch, and a plinth. It has a mixture of sash windows, from the 18th and early 19th centuries, and more modern replacements. The 18th-century main doorway has a moulded canopy with a panelled soffit, carved brackets above panelled pilasters, and a plain fanlight; slender wrought-iron Gothic columns have been added later. The east side features a shop front. Internally, the west end retains a 2-bay timber-frame with gables to the rear and the large chimney stack is attached to its north side. On the first floor is a Tudor stone fireplace with a moulded four-centred arch. The street elevation has seen minor alterations, and the interior has been modernised.
