Description
Nos 7 and 9, George Street, date from the 16th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a timber-framed building with a later front, presenting as two storeys and three upper windows. The roof is tiled, with coved plaster eaves and moulding, and wrought-iron gutter brackets. The walls are rendered and have a plinth. There are Victorian sash windows in reveals. A stone, oval-arched canopy sits on brackets above the entrance to No 7, and a similar canopy is present at No 9. The entrances have boarded doors within solid frames. Inside, the timber framing is exposed, including a cruck, and a substantial chimney breast with a moulded bressumer. The ground-floor windows on the west side replace what was formerly a carriage entrance, originally serving a fire station.
