Description

The Old House is a large building that may have originally served as the Manor House. It dates from the 17th century, specifically 1684, with some early 19th-century alterations. The structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring a substantial timber-framed core. The east-facing front is regular, with some altered openings and five upper windows. The roof is tiled and hipped on the north side, with four hipped dormers that have casement windows.

The walls are made of red brick in both Flemish and English bond, incorporating blue headers. The upper openings are slightly cambered, and there is a first-floor band. The ground floor has two rubbed flat arches with later wider openings on each side, and a plinth. The building features sash windows, with four dating from the early 18th century and the others from the late 18th century, including two wider windows on each side.

The entrance has a simple Tuscan Order stucco doorframe from the early 19th century, complete with a pediment and wide, deep pilasters, set on a stone step. The door itself is a six-panelled design, with two glazed panels at the top, framed within an architrave. At the rear, there are both hipped and gabled extensions, along with a long narrow utility wing extending from the north end. A carved brick date plaque from 1684 is set in a chamfered recess below the eaves at the center of the front.

Flanking walls with curved and weathered tops lead to the forecourt on each end. Inside, there is a first-floor room featuring 18th-century pinewood panelling, two 18th-century staircases with panelled dados, and a massive fireplace from the early period.
