Description
Pond House Barn is a 17th-century barn located on the west side of Aldermaaston Road in Pamber Green. The barn features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding, although part of it has been replaced in the 20th century. It has a half-hipped roof made of corrugated iron, also from the 20th century. The structure consists of five bays and has central opposing cart entries, both of which are blocked. The front entry is in a hipped midstray and includes a stable door and two 2-pane windows on the left side. There is a lean-to addition, likely from the 18th century, with a central entrance on the right. A 20th-century addition is present on the front left, along with garage doors on the right return and windows on the left return.
Inside, the barn showcases a high-quality timber frame with jowelled wall posts that are arch-braced to the eaves plate and tie-beams. It features queen struts to collars, clasped purlins, and pegged rafters, which are marked with assembly numbers in sequence. The interior also includes arched wind braces, and the wall framing retains a mid-rail and some posts. Some of the timbers are reused, and the trusses are marked with assembly numerals.
