Description
Lower Axford Cottage is a timber-framed house that dates from the 16th, 17th, and 20th centuries, featuring a modern extension on the west side. It has a massive old tile roof that is half-hipped at the south end, with a sloping ridge to the north that also ends in a half-hip. The roof includes a tile-hung gable and extends to low eaves above an outshot. The exterior showcases exposed timber-framing with some alterations; on the north side, there is a moulded beam from a jetty and below it, a bay window supported by brackets with a moulded cornice. This area has close studding and some flint infilling. The gables are constructed with massive frames that feature arch-bracing, heavy horizontal members, and closely arranged verticals. The long east elevation contains both old and new sections, indicating former recesses that have been brought to the main face. A small section of 18th-century framing is visible between the older part of the building and the recent extension. The windows are casements, and there is a six-panelled door set in a solid frame, topped by a hood on brackets.
