Description
The lodges and gateway to Hackwood (New) Park, also known as Crabtree Plantation Lodges and Archway, were built in the early 19th century. The tall gateway features two columns in antis, with lower wings on either side that comprise small rectangular lodges. These lodges have forward-projecting, curving plain walls that end in piers. The architectural style is Greek Doric, characterized by a full entablature with nine triglyphs on each face. The two columns have flutes in their upper two-thirds, while the end piers are plain with simple caps and plain plinths.
The lodges face each other behind the gateway and include recessed entrances, a central square column, and end pilasters. The elevation features a blocking course, cornice, plain frieze, moulded caps, and plain plinth. Inside, the ceiling has moulded edges above a fascia. The central doorway is simply designed, flanked by a window on either side. The overall design is distinctly classical and constructed from Bath stone.
