Description

The Church of St Leonard is a Grade II listed building, primarily dating from the 12th century and 15th century, with significant restoration and extension in 1889. It features a single-celled nave and chancel, topped with a continuous old tile roof, and a stone bell-turret above the west gables. The church is constructed from flint with stone dressings, and it has buttresses at the corners and at intervals along the walls. The eastern bay displays flintwork from the restoration, along with a moulded plinth and a cill band around the east end.

The Gothic traceried windows consist mainly of coupled lights beneath hood-moulds, with the east side featuring two square framed lights positioned closely together. The east and west windows have three lights each, all containing stained glass, including a modern design in the west window. A stone south porch provides entry to the church.

Inside, the roof is supported by 15th-century arch-braced trusses with tie beams, closely spaced at the division between the nave and chancel, while the eastern trusses are lighter and more closely arranged. On the north side of the nave, there is a part recess that contains the surviving Norman doorway, which is also visible from the outside. A Victorian vestry is located on the north side, featuring an arched opening into the chancel, where the organ is situated. All the fittings within the church are of Victorian design.
