Description

The Old School House is a 17th-century building, linked to a charity established in 1656, with alterations from the early 19th century. It is two storeys high with four upper and two lower windows. The roof is tiled, with a hipped section at the south end, and features a central stack. The walls are rendered with cement, but retain stone drip moulds above the first-floor windows and stone detailing to the plinth. The windows are casements. A solid gabled porch, dating from the early 19th century, sits centrally and incorporates an arched opening now fitted with a fanlight, above a flush-panelled door. A later rear extension reveals a brick structure and the outline of a mullioned window. A narrow unit on the south side disrupts the original symmetry. Inside, a winding staircase is found behind the central entrance, placed against the side of a substantial chimney breast. A timber frame internal wall may be a survival from the original construction.
