Description
Adbury Farmhouse is a building that dates from the 16th century, with elements from the 17th, 18th, and mid-19th centuries. Originally, it was a medieval hall featuring a two-storeyed cross wing at the south end, with part of its timber frame still visible. In the 17th century, significant alterations were made, including the addition of a large chimney and the construction of a staircase leading to a new first floor. The north end was extended or replaced in the 18th century, and the building was considerably refaced during this period.
The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with a front elevation that features four windows. It is topped with tile roofing and has three gables. A prominent stack with a rectangular base and a moulded brick cornice is topped by three flues, with the outer set arranged diagonally and adorned with brick cornices and bands. The walls are primarily made of red brick, laid mostly in Flemish bond with blue headers, while some lower sections are in old English bond. The openings are slightly cambered, and there are stone cills. The windows are sash style, and the 18th-century six-panelled door, which has two glazed panels at the top, is set in a solid frame and features a plain modern canopy. A lead fire insurance sign (No 34386) is also present.
The rear elevation is irregular and includes a projecting staircase wing, with some old sashes in exposed frames alongside modern casements. Inside, the farmhouse boasts a fine Jacobean staircase with massive handrails supported by twisted balusters and topped with ball finials. Additional interior features include a doorway with bolection mouldings, an 18th-century fireplace on the first floor, a niche-shaped cupboard, and several 17th and 18th-century doors, along with moulded beams.
