Description

The Hop Leaf Public House, located at No 21 Church Street in Basingstoke, is a building that dates from the 17th century, late 18th century, and early 19th century. It consists of two joined but distinct structures. The southern unit is two storeys high with four windows, featuring an old tiled roof and painted brick walls. It has a parapet with stone coping and a band, along with rubbed flat arches. The windows are Victorian sashes, and the ground floor has casements set within a framework that includes a cornice and frieze above four pilasters; the former central doors have been converted into a window.

The northern unit, which is No 23, is taller at two storeys with three windows and has a slate roof. Its walls are stucco with coping to the parapet and a first-floor band, also with rubbed flat arches. The upper windows have sashes set in reveals. On the south side of the ground floor, there is a doorcase leading to the Hop Leaf Public House, featuring a cornice on brackets, plain pilasters, and architraves above steps. Next to this is a plain arched opening that leads to a through passageway. The north side has a late 19th-century shop front. Each parapet is topped with a small gilded eagle, a remnant from when the building was known as the Eagle Tavern, although these were removed at the time of the survey. Inside, there is some evidence of timber-framing.
