Description
The main barn at Wickhurst Farm is an 18th-century double barn situated near Cousley Wood. It is constructed with a timber frame resting on red brick plinths, with weatherboard cladding and a hipped plain tile roof. The barn was built in two phases; an initial four-bay threshing barn was later extended to the west by a further five bays.
The east barn has wagon entries in the third bay from the east, with a projecting wagon porch with a hipped roof on its north side. A single-story cart shed with a catslide roof adjoins the first two bays on the east, with an entry at the eastern end. The west barn has wagon entries in its central bay, and a similar projecting wagon porch with a hipped roof. A short lean-to extension, also under a catslide roof, is situated between the porch and a connected dairy and cattle shed range to the west of the farmyard. Each wagon porch contains a pair of vertical boarded doors.
The barn’s timber frame features jowelled bay posts, central end posts, a single intermediate rail linking all posts, tension braces, and studs within the panels. Internal structural details include queen post trusses with angle braces to the posts and clasped purlins. An inserted hayloft is present in the western bays of the west barn. The threshing floor in the east barn retains raking stays between the sole plates and door posts, along with original boards.
