Description
This is a barn located about 50 meters north of Chittinghurst, likely built around 1500. The barn features 20th-century vertical boarding over a timber frame. The northern end has wattle and daub infill above a midrail, with horizontal boarding and raking poles that support the oversailing eaves plate. The roof is hipped and covered with corrugated iron. The structure consists of four bays, with an off-center threshing floor. The west elevation includes a 20th-century plank door at the west end and a full-height doorway leading to the threshing bay, which is situated south of the center.
Inside, the barn has an exposed timber frame with wall bracing, midrails, and vertical studding. The wall posts are jointed and arch-braced, supporting a chamfered tie-beam of a four-bay crown-post roof, which features raking side struts to clasped purlins. The three bays to the north of the threshing floor are raised, and the truss in the northernmost bay includes additional wall posts with morticing for a floor-beam that has since been removed. This area, along with a window that retains four wood-mullioned lights on the east side, suggests that this bay may have originally been floored and possibly used as a dwelling.
