Description

WADHURST TIDEBROOK TQ 62 NW 22/549 Barn about 50 m north of Chittinghurst GV II* Barn, probably c.1500. C20 vertical boarding over timber frame. N end has wattle and daub infill above midrail over horizontal boarding with raking poles supporting oversailing eaves plate. Hipped roof of corrugated iron. 4 bays with off centre threshing floor. W elevation has C20 plank door at W end and full height doorway to threshing bay, S of centre. Interior: exposed timber frame with wall bracing, midrails and vertical studding. Jointed and arch-braced wall posts to chamfered tie-beam of four-bay crown-post roof which has raking side struts to clasped purlins. Three bays to N of threshing floor are raised, and truss to northern most bay has additional wall posts with morticing for floor-beam now removed, this, together with window, of which 4 wood-mullioned lights remain, on east side suggest this bay was possibly floored originally and may have been used as a dwelling.
