Description
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built between 1856 and 1858 by T H Rushforth in the Early English style. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof. The church consists of a five-bay nave with an undercroft at the west end, a bellcote at the east end, a lower two-bay chancel, a south porch, and a north vestry.
The exterior of the church has a very tall west end due to the sloping ground, featuring a gable with a cross-shaped saddlestone and end buttresses. At the top, there is an arched window with triple trefoliated lancets and two single trefoliated lancet windows below. The undercroft has two triple mullioned windows under relieving arches and a central arched doorcase under a relieving arch. The north and south sides of the nave are mainly adorned with lancet windows. The gabled bellcote at the east end has a cross-shaped finial. The south porch has a lean-to roof with trefoil-shaped saddlestones and an arched doorcase to the east. The lower chancel features lancet windows, including a five-light lancet under a relieving arch at the east end, which has a cross-shaped saddlestone at the apex and trefoil-headed saddlestones on the sides. The gabled vestry to the north includes a chimney and a window with a trefoil above, two trefoil-headed lancets below, and a trefoil-headed doorcase.
Inside, the four-bay nave has an arch-braced roof with curved tension braces resting on stone corbels with a curved pendant. It retains original pews and red and black floor tiles. The pulpit features a stone base with a carved oak top on three sides of a square. The square stone font is set on a large central column flanked by four colonnettes and has a wooden font cover. The pointed chancel arch is supported on chamfered piers. The two-bay chancel has an arch-braced roof supported by six carved angel corbels. The east window includes internal marble colonnettes, and there is a triple sedilia on the southeast wall. The church also features original carved oak choir stalls and a carved communion rail, as well as an organ by Bryceson Bros.
