Description
This is a 15th-century threshing barn located approximately 30 meters east of Burgham Farmhouse. The barn features a timber frame that has been infilled in the 18th century and is clad in partly tarred weatherboarding on a stone base. In the 20th century, the barn was heightened with concrete. The hipped roof, which was originally thatched, is now covered with corrugated iron.
The barn has a central full-height cart entrance on the northwest side and an original half-height entrance on the southeast side, which has since been filled in. It is a three-bay structure with a roof supported by two square-section crown posts, each featuring two head braces that support a collar purlin, which is jointed with jack rafters and has mortices for one footbrace each. The rafters are pegged.
The wall frame includes jowled upright posts and a midrail. The southwest end retains two original curved mid braces above the midrail, although these have been cut off below the midrail. Most of the wall frame infill is from the 18th century. A floor was inserted in the 20th century. There is a lean-to on the southwest side, which is a late 18th-century rebuild and retains weatherboarding in good condition. Originally, there was also a lean-to on the northeast side.
