ETCHINGHAM SHEEPSTREET LANE Barn approx 30m to East of Burgham Farmhouse

GV II

Threshing barn. C15 with wall frame infilled in C18. Timberframed, clad in partly tarred weatherboarding on stone base, heightened in concrete in C20. Hipped roof, formerly thatched, now covered in corrugated iron. Central full height cart entrance to north west and originally half-height entrance to south east, now filled in. 3 bay barn. Roof has 2 crown posts of square section, each having 2 head braces supporting collar purlin jointed with jack rafters and having mortices for 1 footbrace each. Pegged rafters. Wall frame has jowled upright posts and midrail. South west end retains 2 original curved mid braces above midrail which have been cut off below midrail. Other wall frame infill is mainly C18. C20 inserted floor. Lean-to on south west is a late C18 rebuild and preserves weatherboarding in good condition. Originally there was also a lean-to to the north east.
