Description

Fastbridge Farm Barn is a former threshing barn, likely built in the 18th century or early 19th century, although it incorporates some earlier timbers. The 20th-century single-storey additions on the north-east side are not included in the listing.

The barn features oak timber-framing set on a deep brick plinth, with weatherboarding and a plain-tiled gabled roof. It has a rectangular shape with five bays, oriented from north-west to south-east, and includes a central cart entrance with a projecting cart porch on the north-east side.

On the exterior, the south-west side facing the road is weather-boarded, while the north-east side has a central gabled and weather-boarded cart entrance. Some old weatherboarding is hidden beneath the 20th-century additions. Both the north-west and south-east ends are also weather-boarded and gable-ended.

Inside, the roof is of the butt-purlin type with queen struts, featuring alternating in-line and staggered purlins, and rafters with an inserted ridge-piece. The wall-frame is supported by a deep brick plinth and includes a mid rail with mainly diagonal tension braces at the corners and near the cart entrance, along with some curved braces similar to those found in the adjoining farmhouse. There is later brick infill at the south-east gable end. The area below the mid-rail on the north-west end has breeze-block infill, a later wooden hatch has been added to the upper part of the wall-frame, and a now-blocked entrance that cut through the plinth is located in the lower part of the wall-frame.

Additionally, there is an early to mid-19th-century single-storey cattle shed attached to the north-west end of the barn. This shed is constructed of red brick in Sussex bond with a plain-tiled hipped roof and has more recently been used as a milking parlour.
