Description

The barn at The Vines is a structure dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding and a half hipped roof made of corrugated asbestos, which has a catslide over the aisle on the north side. The barn consists of four bays and a single aisle, with evidence of a former outshut at the west end. There is a threshing bay, a single storage bay to the east, and two storage bays to the west, along with opposing wagon doorways. The south doorway has a lowered head and is fitted with a pair of boarded doors. An early 19th-century wagon porch is built over the entry on the north side. The barn includes jowelled aisle and wall posts, with the posts between the first and second bays to the west replaced in the early 19th century. There are intermediate rails in the south and east walls, with evidence of upper triscon braces to the posts in the south wall and surviving tension braces to the posts in the east wall. Each bay panel contains three studs unless additional studs have been added. The roof framing above the principal beams was renewed in the early 19th century, featuring single side purlins, collar ties, and rafters of slight scanting. The barn is listed for its group value with the adjoining coach house and the farmhouse to the west, which is also listed as The Vines.
