Description

The Old House is a late 16th-century, three-bay house featuring an end chimneystack. The ground floor was underbuilt in the 18th century and the building was mainly refenestrated in the 20th century. It is timber framed, showcasing exposed curved tension bracing with plastered infill. The ground floor is constructed of red brick in English bond. The house has a tiled roof with a gable end to the north and an external red brick chimneystack and gable to the south.

On the west side, there is one original diamond mullioned window and two late 20th-century casements, along with 20th-century doors. The north ground floor room, formerly known as the parlour, features a spine beam with a 1½ inch chamfer and lambs tongue stops, floor joists with lambs tongue stops, and an open fireplace with wooden bressumers. The kitchen to the south has a spine beam with a 1½ inch chamfer, plain floor joists, and an 18th-century bressumer over the fireplace.

The first floor includes jowled corner posts, a queen post roof, and an open fireplace in the north rooms. Local tradition suggests that this building is the remaining part of Court Lodge, which was partially removed to Groombridge in Kent earlier in the 20th century, although this structure appears to be a separate self-contained building.
