Description

The Pipewell, also known as the Land Gate, is the second of the medieval gates of the town and was formerly referred to as the Ferry Gate. It was rebuilt in the early 15th century after the French burned the town in 1380. The structure is made of stone rubble and features two four-centred archways with the lower portion of a square tower above. However, the center of the roof above the archways has collapsed. The Pipewell is also designated as a scheduled Ancient Monument.
