Description
The Five Houses comprise a group of five houses forming an L-shaped block, situated in North Street and School Hill, Icklesham, near Winchelsea. The buildings date from the 17th century and are constructed on a series of high cellars.
The facades present four windows to North Street, with three hipped dormers, and five windows to School Hill, also with three hipped dormers. The ground floor is built of stone rubble with red brick dressings and quoins, and is hung with curved tiles above. The roofs are tiled. The windows are casement type. Doorways are set above street level, each with a flat hood supported by brackets, and contain six-panel doors. Below the houses are vaulted cellars, believed to date back to around 1300. Nos. 4 and 5 of The Five Houses are located on School Hill and are described separately.
