Description

The Five Houses comprise part of an L-shaped block of five dwellings built on a series of high cellars, with properties numbered 1-3 facing North Street and numbers 4 and 5 located on School Hill in the village of Icklesham, near Winchelsea. The houses date to the 17th century. The two storeys and attic of numbers 4 and 5 School Hill have five windows and three hipped dormers facing School Hill, and four windows and three hipped dormers facing North Street. The ground floor is constructed of stone rubble, with red brick window dressings and quoins above, and is hung with curved tiles. The roof is tiled. The windows are casement type. Doorways are positioned above street level, each with a flat hood supported on brackets, and feature six-panelled doors. Vaulted cellars, believed to date back to around 1300, lie beneath the houses. Details for numbers 1-3 are listed separately in relation to North Street.
