Description
Windycroft is a large house that was converted from two small houses in 1880. It features red brick construction with tile hanging and scalloped tile courses on the elevations. The roof is red tiled and hipped, with coved eaves and projecting bays that also have hipped roofs. The basement is rusticated stucco, and the building has three storeys, an attic, and a basement. It includes sash windows with glazing bars and has an asymmetrical plan. A hipped dormer is present, along with a balcony that has a cast iron balustrade supported by cast iron brackets. There is a brick chimney stack as well.
The interior is notable for its mosaic floors, a double staircase hall, and a large music room designed with acoustically correct dimensions. The wallpapers throughout the house are original designs by William Morris, and there is tiling by De Morgan around many of the fireplace surrounds. The timberwork in all rooms is of high quality. Windycroft is listed as Grade II* due to its significant interior features.
Windycroft, along with Nos 3 to 18 in succession, forms a group, with Nos 4, 5, 15, 16, 17, and 18 being of local interest only.
