Description
East Cliff House, located at 74 All Saints' Street, was built around 1762 and has undergone some alterations since then. This house was once the residence of Edward Capel, a Shakespearian critic and friend of David Garrick, who frequently stayed here, as noted by a tablet on the building.
The side facing All Saints' Street is cement rendered and not particularly noteworthy, but it features a fine doorway that is recessed within an arch, flanked by Doric pilasters and topped with a large fanlight that has a lantern in the center. The front of the house, which faces the Parade, has a projecting late Victorian shop front that has been significantly altered. Above this shop front, the original house remains largely intact, with a ground floor finished in rusticated stucco and voussoirs.
The building has two storeys, with the upper floor made of yellow stock brick and a hipped tiled roof. It features a stone modillion cornice and a parapet. The ground floor has a central arrangement of three arched windows, flanked by two-storeyed canted bay windows. On the first floor, there are three French windows in the center, flanked by end bay windows, all with a cast-iron balcony. The central first-floor window is set in a moulded shouldered architrave, and the front of the first-floor bay window has moulded architraves with aprons.
To the left and right of the front, there are two-storey sections that are set back slightly, each one bay wide, constructed of red brick with sashes that do not have glazing bars and topped with hipped tiled roofs. The building also features rendered chimney stacks. Inside, there is a good staircase that dates from the same period.
East Cliff House is part of a group of listed buildings on All Saints' Street and forms a group with No 2 and Lavender House on Rock-a-Nore Road, with No 2 being a building of local interest.
