Description
117-118 Marina is a building from around 1830, designed by James Burton. It features a stucco exterior with a parapet and cornice, standing three storeys tall with three windows. The ground floor is rusticated and has three wide segmental arches with moulded imposts. These arches contain two panelled doors with fanlights at the center, flanked by windows, with the right-hand window being large and modern. The first floor has a balcony with an ornate cast iron balustrade and canopy. The sash windows on the first and second floors are set in moulded architraves and do not have glazing bars. The building has a slate roof and includes a low, stuccoed basement area wall with paired pilasters and coping. Notably, No 117 has a plaque indicating that Thomas Carlyle, the author and historian, lived there in 1864. Nos 111 to 127 form a group with this building.
